New Website!

I am very excited to finally be using my brain this winter for something besides baby stuff and crafty stuff ( breaks are good for the flow, I am hoping) - so I decided to take a Fabulous class on building a Wordpress Website. The class is on online course taught by Tara Gentile of Scoutie Girl .com and so far it has been outstanding. The class is broken down into easy to understand lessons with videos and written instructions and access to forums. Now, I say easy, in the sense that you can comprehend the information - but you may have to really dissect and figure out the "how" part of the lesson. In the end, if you follow along, you will have some very nice basic HTML knowledge and a sweet,simple site that you can update yourself. I am happy with this project so far, and hope to really make it more exciting in the future!

I have spent some time playing with this Blogger site for some time now, but never really used it
to any great potential. Soon I will decide if I am keeping this space, or moving the blog entirely onto the website, under Wordpress. My big long term goal in blogging, would be to actually share my projects as I work on them and post tutorials - as I would love to give back to the crafting community online, as it has given to me.

When the site is published, it will be simply : www.fruitcakedesigns.com - but not just yet!

I know that I have abandoned this Blog, but, I had a baby and did not do much else. Fiona Rose
is the new light and joy in which adds to my inspiration. I am sure she will make a guest appearance or two...( todddlers are pretty funny and I make her funny dresses, you'll want to see that...)
All is well here and with the new year, comes a new Fruitcake Designs. ( yay!)

There will be more Domino cuffs, and surprises this year in the Soft goods category! I can't wait to start bringing my sketches to life and share them with everyone. I also hope to give back to the amazing crafting online community and create my first tutorials this year.

Even though I am writing this post to myself, my goal is to not be alone here by the end of this year. I have missed being online, but really, my journey here is just beginning.

Time to sew, time to work harder and smarter, and now, its time for bed.

2009 - The Year of the Waffle

Okay, so I did not come back after New Years, or even Valentines..but with good reason.
I have been quite sick, and tired, and then sick some more. But, again with that good reason!

After 10 or so years I have finally decided to make an addition to the family and give Finn the sibling he has always wanted! Yep, that's right, Fruitcake is going to have a Fruitcup! The big day for finding out what flavor is tomorrow, so I thought it was a good time to get back to my Blog, my Flickr, My Studio, my Crafty world over here that I have been missing.

Its a total family inside joke, but the operating name for the mini belly creature has been Waffle.
I am not sure we can stop calling he/she that now! Naming is quite a crazy discussion around here!

I have an almost non existent inventory after the holidays and I just took all my newest stuff plus what I had left to a wonderful new Gallery/Studio in CT called The Silver Circle Studio , its a beautiful combo of art gallery and handmade retail space. The owner is adorable and really building a great business there in Putnam, amongst all the antique shops and delish restaurants.

So, as I save up for a fresh batch of supplies, small selections of new pendants, and projects like Spring Fat Birdies will be popping up very soon! Please feel free to email me anytime, It's been a long cold, tiring winter and I could use the hello's!

Where oh where did Fruitcake go?

Hello, If you have checked in with me in the past month and I have been MIA, I am sorry! This past month has been crazy and full of SURPRISES! I cannot share with you all the news just yet,but check back in around Valentines day or so for an exciting Fruitcake Announcement.
(I will be around between now and then, mind you...)

Now, in the last month, I have been to Handmade Arcade In PA and had a total blast and sold lots of cuffs, which made me feel very yummy inside. Then I had a show in Worcester, which was nice,but did not sell much of anything, which made me feel burnt inside. Then I had one last big show in Boston at the SOWA Holiday show and again sold lots of cuffs - ending on yummy good feelings!

I have of course, like everyone else been Christmas shopping, sending cards, baking, and sending out my surprise best seller this year - Fat Birdie Ornaments! Yay!!!!!
Thank you all who scooped some up, I really loved making those. In fact, I was so into them, that I think you will see more block printed original and vintage images in 09. I am working on details and colors in my handy dandy - sketchbook.

Hmm, what else?
- I have some of ware now available in Magpie, if you ever in Somerville, Ma and soon to be other New England locations.
- I stated making Domino pendant necklaces after many requests!
- and lastly, the ETSY shop is CLOSED for the holidays, due to open back sometime in Januaryish.

Right now, I am taking care of the Hermit Crabs I have hiding for Finn in my bedroom, making some last minute felty gifts, and looking forward to going to indulge in a bunch of movies at the theater. ahhhh, vacation.....

One of the ones I am partcularly looking forward to, comes out in February - Coraline! Its a stop motion animation, directed by the director of Nightmare Before Christmas. It's about a little girl who wishes her parents were differnt, and well, she gets her wish. It took them 3 years to complete this project and the site is worth taking a peek - checkout the trailer and then use the Map and go to The Other Mother's Workshop - you can play with a fun "button eyes tool". You can upload pictures, change the frames, the buttons and thier sizes. Too cute not to go waste 15 minutes. www.Coraline.com

This is my new fave seller on Etsy, I am ( nicely) ordering you to go see the most adorable Spool Dolls and other sweet things from Alex of Wunderkind Inc.

You might have to poke through her sold items and definitely her Flickr for a super cute and happy few moments of doll love. I never would have thought of doing this, and I agree with her - they are fun to look at and useful.

This one is for me and it's going in my red living room. I am pretty sure I am going to have to buy her some friends to tell secrets to and gossip about what goes on around the house. We have a vinyl toy collection, but they might snub her at first. She will charm them over...
I just know it.

Saturday Surprise

I have a friend who wisely told me that if you get yourself out there on the internet, and participate with comments and posts, it will help get you noticed. While it is fun, and I have been greatly inspired and found new stuff to love ( and buy!) - it is nice when your surprised with a bit of the crafty bloggy love for yourself.

One of the more detailed craft blogs out there ( by detailed I mean lots of categories, authors and stuff to keep you busy for more than one cup of coffee) is Craft Gossip. They post tutorials, new finds and you could be spotted by one of the editors if you post in thier Flickr Pool - which I did. This is a site you will visit often, so make sure to bookmark it to your Craft Blog Folder, I know you have one. ( mine is outta control! But, I like it better then television)

Today they did a nifty Look What I Found on needlework projects and my Fat Birdie Block Printed Ornaments were in the delightful mix. Yay! I needed that little pick me up, Thanks You guys!

Handmade Arcade: Popular In Pittsburgh!

This was such a great, great show, can't say enough good things about it. It was super organized and it went very well. I was so glad that I took a friend all that way to split the booth, the drive, the gas and get a chance to check out all the other FABULOUS vendors. I wish I could have gone on a shopping spree. The show was very diversified in what it offered, with around 85 or so vendors.
The building seems dark in my photos, but it was lit quite well. The building was this HUGE armory, home to jeeps and tanks that guarded one end of the building. It wasn't really cold, so that was another bonus.

I got lucky, and had a nice spot up front, to be one of the first booths people saw upon entering. There were crowds lined up outside to get in both days, and they stayed, and they shopped - what more can you ask for?

This year, I invested in better displays and packaging and feel that it was well worth it. One of the things I love to do besides see the crafts, is how others do their presentations and packaging, I really feel its the polish on your products that win over a hesitant buyer sometimes.
I have cute square pink boxes for my cuffs and that makes me happy, I hope it makes you happy if you buy one! ha ha!

For some reason, my inner photo junkie did not come with me on this trip, not sure why, so I just have these few dark shots.

I also did some Fab-0 trades with the most excellent people of Pink Kiss Pottery Studio, Strawberry Luna, and My Paper Crane - I love really good trades like these, so all around it was a totally worth it and fun trip to make.

Cept, I am kinda wiped of stock and have more shows. I know, such a problem to have, right?

Back to the crafty Salt Mines with me....I am actually working on a few new things too, cause you can't stop the rockin.....

Holiday Shopping...On your Mark, Get set....

I am a busy little bee, in my studio most of the time these days making sweet goodies for upcoming shows. I will be in Pittsburgh next week at the Handmade Arcade, sharing space with my good buddy Ursula and Olive, and of course had to make something new. Besides the cuffs,necklaces, snifflers, and birdie ornaments, I have whipped up these pretty little felted rose pins.

I keep a stash of wool sweaters that I felted around, for making crafts for gifts or when inspiration strikes. I acquired a big bag of vintage green stem pins, and finally found a great flower idea for them! They are in my Etsy shop as well.

Fat Birdies For the Holidays!

New update tot he Etsy shop today, I have baked up some fresh stuffed birdies! I have had this stash of block printing supplies for a long time and finally got around to playing with them. I carved up a nice round birdie, and a vintage deer motif ( from a 1930's stencil book that was my great grandmothers!) and will have those soon too.

I experimented with printing on faux velvet and cotton. Cotton made nicer prints, but I am not giving up on exploring more fabrics!

One Eyed One Horned, Flying Purple People Eater!!!

Okay, so he was sans the One Eye Part....overlook that fact and we have a pretty fun costume! I was given a bunch of purple and blue faux fur last year, and have not really know what to do with it..until now! What started out as, " Hey - let's make a werewolf costume" this year, turned into this:
We made him wearing clothes, fur arms, fur legs( tubes of fur attached to clothes) and feet( covers and elastic) purple duct tape tummy, black fingernails, fingerless gloves, makeup face, dog collar, cool wings ( from a cheapo dissected and beheaded bat decoration) and a nice big black horn. Voila! A very happy ten year old, and it all only cost me about $10.00, as I actually had most of that stuff on hand!

He won the school dance costume contest, so, you know, go Mom.

This weekend was made of those amazingly picturesque Fall days that you dream about. Perfect weather, tons of leaf peeping and lots of activities to go check out. Saturday took me up to Sutton,MA and to a historic graveyard, where the Gravestone Girls were on hand to

give us some local lore and facts about the stones left behind in cemeteries. They knew their stuff about the dead, and have a fabulous line of castings and jewelry. If your interested in doing some historic walkabouts of your own cemeteries and get the urge to try some rubbings, check the do's and don't first, so as not to disturb the living who protect the dead! Blog Lurking

Officially Blog Lurking is one who visits and reads the site on a regular basis,but does not participate with comments or adding info in some way. I do love to read many many craft blogs,but don't always have a comment,( I am actually supposed to be doing something else most of the time, soooo) - But I do super appreciate the posts,tutorials and ideas that I have been inspired with!

I wanted to share some of my very fave craft blogs today and how they have inspired me.
I try to crafts for my home and with my son that are not focused on being for sale,but just for the fun of it. I value those projects more!

A site that has been getting posted about all over, The Crafty Crow, is just one of the most fun I have seen. Its quick bites of adorable projects you can do with or for your kids. There's recipes, links to other tutorials, and ideas galore. I think this one should be shared with everyone you know that has kids.
I am going to try the woodsies robots for Christmas presents with Finn this year. I'll let you know how it goes. Seriously, I can't stop looking at all the projects. It will make you want to do arts and crafts every single day.

For a more grown up craft night, grab a good mug of something hot and snuggle up to Betz White with her fabulous felted goodness.
She is the felted cupcake baker as well as a ton of other ideas you can find in her book "Warm Fuzzies". She teaches us how to thrift wool sweaters into amazing and useful things, like blankets, kids clothes, home decor and more. Plus, she posts wonderful free tutorials on her Blog - plus she's a mom! How do the crafty diva's do it all??? There is the most adorable pomander tutorial on there right now, just in time to begin your holiday gift making frenzy. Here is the link to that:

And for a third scoop of the cute and super crafty, I just found this one yesterday- Pimp Stitch - so I am still delving into all it has to offer. I can tell right away though, its fabulous and fun. Creative embroidery and sewing, plus tutorials, a great combo,bookmarked it right away!

I have been very inspired by all the great crafters who take the time to share, and I am hoping to start making and posting my own tutorials. Its on my goals list for this Blog and myself. It's good to give yourself challenges, but even better to follow through!

So, here is my 7 items for immediate dispatch and perusal:

I have a half sister, she lives In Arizona, we didn’t grow up together so none of my friends have met her – get this, we were born almost 7 years apart exactly. My B-day is Sept 20th, her is the 21^st.
My first concert was Tears For Fears, what was yours?
I was an extra in the made for TV movie mini series “Asteroid” in Denver,CO. I got paid $80.00 and dinner.
I have no adnoids, I had them removed when I was in kindergarten.
I met Cory Feldman at a party in CA, I was really drunk and tried to flirt with his wife. Silly me.
I worked at a costume shop for a year and when the bosses were out, we used dress up and take polaroids of ourselves all day. I miss that job.
I bake up a storm when I am upset,stressed or pmsing. There’s apple crisp in the kitchen. Guess which one I am now.

So, now I have to run the playground and politely smack down some blogging pals. I choose you Picachu: I Heart Peanut Butter, The Pawsh Poodl e, Alamodestuff, Sadie Lou Who - Hopefully they were not previously tagged!

Vintage Findings Mixes, and Contest

I have decided to branch out with my Studio Stashes and Supplies, as my buying sprees tend to overflow my own studio at times. I have been a busy bee posting new Domino Cuffs this week and thought it would be fun to make up a few supply bags and a new idea- Domino Cuff Kits you can make yourself!

Right now, I have just put the pre-drilled dominoes, cord and some black Czech glass beads in there, with a cute little "cheat sheet" of ideas to help you make them similar to what mine are like. What do you think? Should I make them bigger, with bead choice colors and papers? Include some findings or vintage dictionary sheets for collaging? hmmm, it would make a cute stocking stuffer....

Okay, now I am goofing off, so time to get the apple crisp out of the oven and head over to catch the second to last Project Runway. (Go away Kenley already!)

Apples, Apples, and more Apples

No doubt, its time to either get your Orchard time in or figure out what to do with all the apples you picked over the weekend, right? I was thinking about more than just crisps and pies this year and wanted to share what came up with.

The first one is a bit off beat,but its a wonderful school-hood memory for me. I was lucky enough to have my favorite teacher twice, as she switched grades. Ms. Abraham was this quirky lady who wore too much mascara, and was tough on us, but I loved her just the same. She had our class do this "creative writing project" that centered around...check this - Apple Head Dolls. Not heard of them? They are an old Americana craft, believed to go back to early Indian tribes.

I was going to try my hand at a tutorial, but I found a great resource and instruction site:
Apple Dolls. Org. This should at least give you ideas, should you want to try it.

Next, I found the new recipe that I am most interested in trying, its simple so it wins:

Baked Apples with Mexican Chocolate - and its Martha, of course. ( It's Halloween, so I am pretty much devouring her site right now. There is this soo cool Jelly Fish costume....I digress...)

Ingredients

Serves 4

2 medium apples
5 large marshmallows, 1 quartered, 4 halved crosswise
1 ounce Mexican chocolate, coarsely chopped
2 ounces (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter
2 tablespoons water

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Halve each apple lengthwise. Using a melon baller or grapefruit spoon, scoop out seeds, forming a small crater in center of each half.
Fill each crater with 1 marshmallow quarter and 1/4 of the chocolate. Cut 2 tablespoons butter into small pieces, and divide among apples, placing over chocolate.
Place water and remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a baking dish. Place filled apples in dish. Bake until a paring knife inserted into apples meets no resistance, 20 to 30 minutes.
Set oven to broil. Top each apple half with 2 marshmallow halves. Broil until golden brown. Drizzle with juices.

Helpful Hint

Cooking times for different types of apples vary; begin checking for doneness after 20 minutes.

PS. Mexican chocolate is that round, individually wrapped package that says drink mix or hot chocolate on it. It smells amazing!( I know Whole Foods has it.)

A Moment in Time

I used to go to parties, I used to be more social. I used to think myself clever and try to eek more interesting conversation out of people by asking them funny or probing questions. Now, it seems that I spend a lot of time alone and just have myself to ask all these things of.

My questions now are more visceral, and evoke emotions that I have to find ways to explain.
I am guessing this is good for an artist,but I am a crafter, I make with the cute,not the deep! This has come to pass where, when I meet new people, I am looking at them to see if they are on my wave length or not.....when did this happen? When did I start caring about wave lengths?

I am too young to go on one of those self discovery journeys! I believe we can create ourselves as we go along, shape and reshape as needed. Right? I hope so. I hope that I can truly learn to appreciate the very small moments in life, take them into my current shape and let them relax me when I need it most. This universe is filled with moments, blink and they are gone.

So, to try and get out of my own head so much and feel more a part of the big picture, I vowed to connect with one sweet "moment in time" each day. My version of a take five, a mental break form chores and stress. Lets hope it works.

I wanted to share this one, because its just as nice and simple as it gets. When I was little, around three, we lived in Tennessee, and one of my first memories was of the Morning Glories we had outside the house. I loved those flowers so much.
This year, in my first new house, I wanted to plant some, as the people before me left their trellis.
I do NOT have a green thumb, let me say. I bought pre started morning glories and they all kinda died before Spring had sprung. I had one funny little straggler left, I popped him in there anyway. I never expected anything of him, so perhaps that was why he chose to give me this gift, and just in time for my birthday....my one little friend, who peeked into my bathroom window to say hello.
Expect nothing and sometimes you get everything.

I need to hold on tho this thought.

A beautiful sunny day and such fun festival! Excellent check in procedures for such a large show, lots of art happening everywhere, a ton of fabulous vendors and the crowds were there - and buying! I was pleased to sell a bit of everything from my traveling boutique, as it now seems to be. Surprisingly, my orange Halloween Domino bracelets were a big hit, I just didn't take any good pictures of them.

Necklace Mania

I have vintage plastic flower parts fever, and the only cure is....( no I will not say more cowbell, even though it's pretty obvious I want to) ...to make lots of fun new Necklaces! I made one of these months ago and kept it. The only thing is, when I was done, they reminded me of colorful vintage Christmas Wreaths. Ha! Now I said it - you can see it too, and can't unsee it. le sigh. Oh well, they are still pretty adorable, and if you want to wear for the holidays, who am I to stop you?

Well, almost. I am totally cheating, as its not really until Saturday,but what's a few days..really.
I decided that no one knows what I like better than me. And, I like Jewelry. A lot. Especially super unique stuff. So, instead of sneaking down to the fridge for the last piece of ricotta pizza, I am treating my self to a very low fat treat. I wanted to share my new necklace I just bought, cause I was in need of a present. ......as if one neeeeeds a present. LOL.

Pawtucket Arts Fest

This show was in a lovely park, and had great vendors, I am still undecided if it was a good show for me - but it was a fab day to hang with some wonderful crafters I know. And I got to have a corn dog! ( It doesn't take much these days to excite me, does it?)

This was one of my first posts, but truly worth sharing. I got it from a M.E> Home Companion eons ago and I make so many I keep bags of the dry ingredients in baggies all ready to go. srsly.

Want to make the best Pumpkin Bread EVER?
This recipie makes 2 loaves at a time and only uses on can of pumpkin! It's very much like cake!
...and even if you have never thought of adding the chocolate chips - DO IT!!!! Its sooo Fabulous, you'll make it for Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and just beacuse. I promise. Fruitcake's honor.

Hints: also add 1tsp Cinnamon and use Dark Chocolate chips - they taste better with the pumpkin! ( no really, and if your chicken, you have 2 breads, so give one some and the other none, geeesh!)

Emmy's Pumpkin Bread
2/3 cup shortening or 1 cup vegetable oil

2 2/3 cups sugar
4 large eggs
2 cups (or one can) pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
2/3 cup water
3 1/3 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips

In a large bowl, cream together the shortening or oil and the sugar. Beat in the eggs, pumpkin and water. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and vanilla, stirring to blend, then mix in the chips and nuts.

Spoon the batter into two lightly greased 9 x 5-inch loaf pans. Bake the bread in a preheated 350°F oven for 1 hour, or until a cake tester inserted in the center of the loaf comes out clean. Remove the bread from the oven, and cool it on a wire rack. When it's completely cool, wrap it well in plastic wrap, and store it overnight before serving.

If desired, just before serving, drizzle with an icing made of 1 cup confectioners' or glazing sugar, 2 tablespoons melted butter, and 1 tablespoon milk. ( I have not done this, i don't think it needs more sugar!)

Fab Flea Rehab - What have you redone lately?

Okay, I just really like saying that. It’s adorable. Fabulous Flea Market Finds that get Rehabilitated – just doesn’t sound as fun.

I am, as are many, a thrift store,yard sale, flea market junkie. I have decided to add my junk- to -funk section to enjoy the treasure hunting process even more by making use of years worth of collections – trims, button, fabrics, etc…This is where you get to score something totally sweet, without having to drive around for hours!

Trash to treasure seems more like an extra side hobby that just takes your life over before you knew what decopaged you.

Here is my list of " You might be a Trash Junkie If..."
1) You know when OTHER neighborhoods trash day
2) They know you by name at your local thrift store
3) You have stuffed int0 the closet, garage,and under the bed, your "secret collections"
4) Abandoned chairs are more alluring than stray cats
5) One of your key phrases is " I don't know what I will do with it, but I HAVE to have it.
6) also "I will think of something to do with it" ( even if its 3 years later)
7) Your cure all mantra is "Paint it!!!" ( who doesn't love the smell of spray paint in the backyard?)
8) Hiding your newest hall is second nature
9) Fridays are for getting Yard Sale ones and change ready
10) You actually have an "I break for yard sales" bumper sticker

So, if you fit at least three of these things, I am afraid your outlook is trashy. But.. the good news is the treasure is only one neighbors white chair with a ripped seat away....oh wait, that's my newest project...anyone seen my staple gun?????

Nope, your not. Cause he has a "Jerry Maguire Kid" brain and he knows how much it weighs, I assure you. Every night he creeps in and asks what he has taken to calling " the weird question of the day". I thought he was getting them from a book, but, no, they are all his. Last nights gem was a series of ponderings about animals dreams and what they might be. uh, huh. "I am sure they do" I said and went back to cutting shapes out of felt.

You know, I actually have no idea if animals dream, and its been a while since I had such a random thought. Perhaps I should have a weird question of the day.

Smell them roses, because your kids WILL grow up before your eyes way to fast.

Fat Birdies are too cute!

I know that when I get back to illustration, my first love, that it should be a lot more dramatic than a little fat birdie - but I drew him months ago and he has been on the bulletin board staring at me. So, now Fruitcake has Fat Birdies. I printed them out on fabric "paper" that goes through the ink jet and did up like 10 prototypes before settling on this cute fabric brooch. ( my desk is a mountain of felty scraps now, joy)

I think they would look cute on a tote bag,no? I also whipped up a few big ones to experiment making appliques, for, guess what - yep tote bags! I think I will clean up my desk first.

Next, I have to make a cute card for them and then make a whole bunch to bring to shows.

Road Trippin!

Sometimes one needs to get out the familiar and get a change of scenery...and In November Fruitcake and Ursula and Olive will be heading out to Hand Made Arcade in Pittsburgh, PA! I am very excited to " take our show on the road", but this means I will have to dive into stock making overload! Since we are sharing a space, we have to plan carefully and it I will have advice later on about sharing and the best do's and don'ts. Darlene of U and O also share a love of vintage goodness and makes the cutest book character cameos. She also has a great line of Geek Girl pendants, that have total pop culture fabulousness. Sweet New Site(s)

I was referred by a super sweet Gal - Layla of Dollface Design, to check out a new up and coming online marketplace: LOLLISHOPS that has what they call a "frou frou" friendly atmosphere.

It's juried, so that they can keep the site in line with a vision, and looks very promising and delicious! Really, it looks like cupcakes and frosting all over. In reading throughout the blog, it seems they have about 400 vendors already lined up for the grand opening ( tba, it seems) It already includes many of my fave vendors, so can't wait to see what happens next.

I am excited to see a place where romantic, elegant, whimsy, vintage, and sweet are the main focus. I applied myself to be a part of the fun, but either way, I wish them lots of luck on their adventure!

Oh, and please, check out Doll Face's shop, her prints are beyond Fab, I have one in my studio right now!

I am thinking that I may start a new weekly feature, based on this post, themed with a "too sweet to eat" kinda feel. Kicking titles around, but will have no shortage of Vintage Inspired, well inspirations to share. Check back soon, as I intend to fully get this Blog up and running again with posts very often and many more pictures and features.

I am in my studio full time and gearing up for shows like mad. I am working on Domino Cuffs with lots of vintage findings, handbags, new cameo style tote bags, trash to treasures, and plenty of top secret stuff. All sweet, all fab, and all keeping me up waaaaaaaay past bed time.

Hello Dolly

I have been very far away from sewing and do miss it lots. I feel officially settled into the new house - the family taken care of and a good deal into the arranging and decorating phase of the house. The house has the walls mostly painted, and curtains have been hung, now it needs the life touches of prints, art and the fun finds from thrifty hunting trips.... all in good time. My machine is calling, and Fruitcake must be revived.

I have been buying new fabric, new trims and found a fabulous stash of vintage hats to take apart.
I am pulling out tiny satiny leaves and washing them one at a time... now thats love of the game!

The first project of 2008 was this doll for my friend Kim's new baby. I started a quilt,but it vexed me and I pulled it apart and it became Dolly's dress. Ha, I will not be defeated!

The next project will be a new bag for the back of my new business cards...lets just say one Saturday made me buy 3 yards of sassy sweet deep pink velvet.....mmmmmm

I did not feel like working on anything I was 'supposed' to be doing last night for shows. I decided to draw up my first attempt at my own bunny doll and mess with that. After I made it, I have decided that the tail is too big and she needs more style. I think a little button pearl necklace and an apron would fruitcake her up a bit more. Plus, I think I think I will try other face variations.......

Sometimes when you get in a crafting funk, all it takes is a small, unexpected piece of random appreciation to get you back on track! I spend waaay to much time on crafting blogs, I have to admit - but the other day as I was checking one of my very faves - whip up, I got a nice surprise!
The person who did a spotlight on handmade cuffs on Etsy, included one of mine! Yay! You can see the blog entry here. This Blog one focuses on a wide variety of art, craft and has some awesome tutorials. I heart tutorials big time. Its like mini classes at your beck and call. Try googling just about anything you wanna learn and put tutorial after it, see what you get! My yo-yo obsession came from that very idea.

What I have been up to:

I have did my first show of the season at Providence Open Market - it was swell, except for the dirt and dust ( always ask what the place you will be is like, dirt is not fun by the end of the day)
I sold some of my brand new vintage button cuffs that I didn't even get to take pictures of
( always take pictures right after you make it!) ( I am full of advice today, no??)

We are house hunting, which is exhausting. Its hard since both of us need studios and room for the kiddos. I hope we find one soon! Anyone want to have a yard sale with me????

Making lots of new stuff and revamping the Etsy store. Going to add "bunnies" this week. I really like bunny stuff and need to amuse myself somehow.

New Crafty...New Cuffs!

Vintage Wallpaper Craft ONE:

Okay, so I haven't been posting my own crafts, bad fruitcake. I have been making them though, I assure you. I don't feel like my pictures ever do me justice, but I try.

I recently found more vintage wallpaper in my attic stash ( its a magic stash, ha ha) and have decided on number of projects for them. The first one is more domino cuffs, cause they are so adorable! The paper is from the fifties ( maybe more?) and looks like it was meant for a child's room. I have made a dozen so far. They take more time than they look like - you have to find a good spot to cut,paste and varnish on....but, they were fun! Some have animals, some have just flowers.

***I am putting a few in the ETSY shop today, probably about 6 or so. I have to say though, they do better in person, because people ( okay women) like to play with them! I promise they are as comfy as they are cute. You should see how many end up in my room!

Maine: The quiet state

My parents did what most people in MA seem to do when they retire.... move to Maine.
Now, at first I thought they were crazy and wouldn't catch me up there, except for summer visits to the ocean. They built their own log cabin on and carved out a home on a rocky piece of land in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, literally. Well, I think the folks of Sullivan would not agree with me, but city folk sure would.

They live about an hour from Bar Harbor and in a very rural area. Don't make me go off on my new definition of rural, that's another story ( one with chickens in the front yard next to the half a bus,7 Christmas inflatables, 87 yard toys and perhaps a house, I am still not sure...but I digress...)

Where they live is quite beautiful and all who live on Lake Tunk take pride in their property. Mainers are as friendly as their reputation and that makes them as close to aliens as you can get, in my book. My parents live there because its quiet and peaceful and because my Mom has MS .....(and) this is a really nice place to be "marooned" if you know what happens with progressive MS. The house is wheelchair heaven and makes an excellent visiting spot for all family and friends.

In fact, the past five years has won me over. I love Maine, I really do. Exploring, eating, relaxing,talking to "folks", antiquing, and generally just appreciating the passing of time is a sweet escape. Now, I get lost in the fresh air, seaside moments and hunting out vintage goodies up there, but I am always glad to return to the hustle and bustle of my metropolitan life style.

But, if your going about 5-6 hours up to the "Down East area", call me, I know some great places you should go.

Granted, you have to dig out your sharpest scissors, refine your motor skills and last but not least remember where you last saw the glue...but hey, it's fun!

Black and White is IN

I came across several rolls of vintage (err,probably 60-70's) vinyl wallpaper. I have had it for years and it only just recently occurred to me to try sewing with it! It sews up fabulously, and is pretty darn durable, but still a bit thin. I mad some whole bags out of it and they came out great.
My only concern is how long it would last - I mean I know how rough I am on bags, and I have to imagine most gals on the go throw theirs around quite a bit too.

It has so many different ladies and types of styles on it, the projects one could do seem endless...

So, I decided to hunt out some nice light weight black canvas and make summer totes. I put a big rectangle of the vinyl on each side, and added pre-made white cotton straps. I like them! I am considering adding a simple bit of trim or a flower or something, as I cannot help myself in that department. This first one is in the Etsy shop today. Its only $20.00. Say you saw it on my blog and you can have it for $15.00!!!! Fruitcake thyself right now....

New project...Sassy Headbands!

For Spring and Summer I will be bringing something new to my shows. This project is great because it uses all the smaller and odd pieces laying around the studio; plus it gives my yo yo madness a place to be. I even took the time to make a matching little fabric sleeve over the elastic in the back so as not to snag your hair. yay! They look really cute on, but I didn't take any pics of them being worn just yet. I am also happy, because I found the right sized tall clear bags for them and I ordered some new logo stickers to seal the deal. They will look Sweet and Sassy indeed!

Son of Fruticake!

Meet Jeff, the magical flying pickle. Yes, I said pickle. His big secret is that he can't really fly, he hides a jet pack under his cape. He was created by Finn, my silly 8 year old son. I was very proud of him for making his first felt softie, all on his own. He drew the picture and pattern out, cut it, sewed it by hand and eevn made a comic book to go with it.

Ahhh, does crafty mom's heart good. ( and it kept him occupied so I could get stuff done! HA!)

Inspiration and getting your craft on...

I was sewing up a storm for a new project ( not to be revealed yet!) when the husband wanted to get out of the house and go to the book store. I had to be bribed with a coffee of course.... It is nice to sit int he big comfy chairs and read the books and not have to buy them. I checked out the new Craftivity, and this book by by Sally Jean Alexander. I was not all that in love with the first, but the second one was very inspiring. It probably only highly appeals to those who love vintagey ephemera and such, and that would be me! Maybe it was just the quiet mood the recent snowstorm instilled.

I immediately went home and dug out my findings tins and made this pretty little thing for myself. I should get things I make once in a while, right?

I have know for a while that I am many things, but a photographer not being one of them. I am at peace with this and have decided that my lovelies can be used to barter better skills. ( I would love to discuss bringing back more bartering into this century but thats a blog of a different color) I have asked my dear friend Kim to please please take better pics and photo shop them into fabulousness. Thankfully she likes my stuff and said yes. yay! I promise, I will learn myself, but for now I have bribed the right person.

As far as doing craft shows, it pays to have really good images of your work. I have interviewed seasoned vets and they say that they have gotten into shows, and better sales because of good photos. I believe in this now. Even the top Etsy sellers have vouched for this on forums. You can see the difference in their whole presentation. So, this year I vow to get better pics, cuter product cards, and sweeter packaging. I am going all out. Join me in the crafty madness....won't you?

Yo Yo Madness???

Today was a very lazy Sunday. I did do housework,but not as much sewing as I should have. I managed to get this flower done, cause I have it in my head to make the images for website icons myself.
It's made of a really soft recycled sweater that go t washed and shrank by accident. sigh!

We did sneek out and see 300 , and I got a yummy starbucks mocha, so that was the cherry on the lazy day sundae. I would say that I really liked the colorization and the battle scenes were well choreographed. Even though it was almost 2 hours, you sorta felt like they could have given you abit more in some way? But, I kinda gave up dissecting movies, the nice escape into a fantasy for a few hours is good enough for me. Plus, we saw a kick ass trailer for the new Quinten T. movie, I am emailing our movie date couple right now!

I was going to have my awesome illustrator husband do the drawings for the icons, but it takes forever since I am not a paying client. ha ha! I have to play with the website myself and it takes alot of time and I never seem to be quite satisfied with how its going. The fantasy is still having enough funds to just hand it over to a web genius and have them make me the prettiest little site you ever did see. One can dream....

So, for now, I got better lighting, and photoshop installed. Lets see how much magic I can make on my own.
The most important part is making the goodies......off I go to make more flowers. hi ho hi ho......

I love when inspiration hits at odd moments, it is like its own special cousin of deja vu. It could be a bizarre feeling that leads to a memory that leads to sensing something in the present that you can't figure out why...it never struck you before? I get a little crazy with the self conversation when this happenes and ask my self "why didn't you think of this before, huh?. " My answer is, uninterestingly enough the same every time I get into a personal semantics kinda thing: "well, you just did!" hmmmmm, self discoveries are way to deep to every make sense anyway - right? At least, to anyone you might try and explain them too. Take for instance my little project last night. I need more stock for cuffs to take to craft shows. I was tooling around the studio and had an odd remembrance ( now this will strike anyone who knows me as funny, cause I am renowned for having a terrible memory!) of being in elementary school and being in the art supply closet. ( yes, alone) It was in the hall, out of the classroom, and I just loved going in there! The odd thing I was reminiscing about was all the bits of Chinese newspaper that things came wrapped in in there, or were in there for some reason. I was so fascinated by it. I have no idea why, but I think it was an early clue to my aesthetics.
Anyway, all of a sudden I remembered that I had bought a vintage ( 40's!) dictionary and encyclopedia ( I may not cut this up, cause it's a hoot to peruse!!) ...and the pictures are so awesome! Tiny little drawings, prints really - mini artwork when you think about it. Someones job was to draw out various animals,machine parts, plant life and such for the world at large. The kicker is that was graphic designing int he 40's. You probably had a cool job? Ugh, digressing again....You have guessed already that I ripped and glued and fruitcaked them to make new Domino cuffs, eh? Did you? I had a good time, and that's all that really matters here. I think they are pretty cool and they stay true to my vintage inspired vision.
I especially liked Mr. Chimp. Ta-da! All done.

Time to go back to the studio and string the rest.

Aaaaaacchoooo! These will NOT be added to my Etsy site, but taken to craft shows and for little giftys instead. I am using up all sorts of bits of vinatge fabrics and trims to make these cute little tissue holders. My first thought was that they were a bit silly, but they are sooooo fun to make. ( uh, cause thier easy, I may be crafty gal extrroidinare,but I am kinda lazy at heart,ha!)
I am trying to make lots of color combos and keep thier price to a nice low little item. I intend to get tissues all ready to go with them.
Bonus! yay!

mmmm...Vintagey Goodness!

I have been saving these adorable little old embroidered buttons forever.I have used some for baby socks, some for small decor projects and then I just put them away and saved them some more. They need to be used and loved.
I just posted them on Etsy for $7.00 a pair. I have 8 sets of each pair available,but hopefully not for long! I think they would make great stocking stuffers or to tie on a present with a bow.
They look cool sticking out of your up do, like hair jewelry!

"Other Treats" include Vintage button silver- plated hairpins. You can use them to hold back stray locks or add decor to your up do, which is what I use them for.
My stock always varies, as half the fun is finding the buttons!
Prices vary from $7.00-$15.00 depending on just how vintage ( cool) the buttons are.

Vanilla Dominoes with assorted colors of Czech Glass beads.
I have purple,black,silver,red, orange,copper,clear,blue,olive, green, turquoise, rose and other colors that are mixed hues. Matching earrings with jet black beads and silver earwires.
Sets go for $29.00. ( the earrings pictured have real vintage black beads; I don't always have vintage ones in stock,but hunt them down regularly!)

I made mini velvet collages on about a dozen cuffs. Hand & mchine sewn deatails - silver,black or clear/multi hued glass czech beads. They have a cool, vintagey look. I will be experimenting with new fabrics and vintage button outfits for them soon! They go for $30.00.

Purple Bunny sold yesterday. He was my favorite, the only other one I am keeping. It only appeals to a select few, I imagine anyway! I made matching earings as a treat. I am going to start making sets of cuffs with earrings for gifts. Want some?
